Classical Christian education forms students in wisdom and virtue through the pursuit of the good, the true, and the beautiful—all to the glory of God.
Cultivating Wisdom and Virtue Through Classical Education
Cultivating wisdom and virtue is the primary goal in a classical education. This is generally accomplished through the study of timeless works of history, reading beautiful literature, and emphasizing the Seven Liberal Arts:
The Trivium: Grammar, Logic, and Rhetoric
The Quadrivium: Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy
Latin, the most influential language in human history, is taught early and well. This develops students’ young minds, giving them the capacity to mentally exercise the language portion of their brains, while also preparing them to read classic and medieval texts in the authors’ original language.
"Latin is taught early and well, developing students’ young minds and preparing them to read classic and medieval texts in their original language.”
Classical education also seeks to develop a students’ moral imagination, teaching them to detect and appreciate the good, true, and beautiful in God’s creation.
Ultimately, a classical Christian education strives to cultivate a sense of life-long learning in a student, whose soul is shaped and bent towards virtue and the truth of the Gospel.
The Classical Model at Charis Classical Academy
At Charis Classical Academy, we structure our curriculum around the Trivium, which mirrors how children naturally develop in their ability to learn. The Quadrivium then describes what the students study as they mature into higher levels of thought and reasoning.
As a Classical Christian school, Charis utilizes these liberal arts as a framework for education, fundamentally aiming to shape the minds and souls of students in wisdom and virtue as they seek to glorify God.
“Shaping the minds and souls of students in wisdom and virtue, for the glory of God.”
“Classical Education is the study of the classics (and the classical languages that produced them) and the liberal arts: the best that has been thought and said, and the intellectual skills that equip a student to think critically. It is the cultivation of wisdom and virtue through the study of the great books and the development of basic critical thinking skills in order to pass on and preserve Western civilization.”
